Hand wash with mild, non-bleach soap is the general rule to remember. Dry clean is discouraged, even for Jusi or Piña, because the strong dry clean solution makes these fabrics yellowish and brittle over time. Occasionally, however, dry clean may be resorted to only if exigencies of a person's circumstances call for it. It is the regular exposure to strong chemicals, which causes the slow damage mentioned above.
Before the actual hand washing, soak your Barong in a solution of water and non-bleach soap or detergent for about 30 minutes to loosen up the dirt. Using a soft brush (an old toothbrush will do), brush dirty spots like those around the inner collar and inner cuffs. If needed, rub between palms but never wring or squeeze as these will cause hard-to-remove wrinkles. Rinse with plenty of water. Hang to dry preferably using a coat hanger to maintain the contours of the shoulder. Then, iron while damp at medium to high setting, depending on the fabric.
Different Barong fabrics require different styles of pressing, as well as different temperature settings. Please be guided by the following:
For Piña, low-medium setting. Being fully lined, iron the reverse side first. Use water or starch spray to maintain crispness and shine.
For Jusi, use medium to high temperature (contrary to many people's belief, Jusi can withstand heat much more than other synthetic materials like polyester or rayon). Before ironing dampen fabric by spraying with clean water. You may also use starch spray to add crispness and shine.
For Ramie/Linen, medium to high dry ironing is needed. Do not steam iron as it will not remove the fine wrinkles, which all natural fabrics like Ramie are prone to have. As in ironing Jusi, you can instead use water spray or starch spray.
For Polyester, low to medium dry ironing is required as polyester is a synthetic material. To avoid scorching, test the flat iron heat on a separate swatch of fabric. The use of water spray is also recommended for Polyester.
Back to the era when the Barongs used by our ancestors were made of unlined and really coarse fibers, particularly abaca, they wore a camisa de chino made of cotton underneath to prevent skin rashes and irritations. Now, even with the use of smooth fabrics, the wearing of a cotton undershirt is still needed so as to cover one's skin and bring out the beauty of the Barong. Also, a cotton shirt absorbs one's perspiration before it gets seen in the Barong. In the absence of a camisa de chino, any plain skin-hugging round-necked cotton shirt will do, and it should be worn tucked in the trousers.
Pants made of dark-colored Wool or Polyester blends are the ideal pair for Barongs. Formal pants should be worn with Piña and Jusi Barongs. For the less formal Ramie Linen and Polyester Barongs, regular khakis or pants of Polyester blends can be used. For the Bridegroom, if the color motif will allow, we recommend off-white or ecru trousers to make him stand out from the entourage.
